Synthetic Oil vs. Regular Oil: What’s the Difference?

Oil Change

At our Wilmington service center, you can rest assured that we provide car owners with a wide range of quality automotive services and maintenance expertise. One major part of owning a vehicle is keeping the oil topped off and clear of debris. So what’s the difference between synthetic and regular car oil? Learn more about oil and its importance with the Land Rover Wilmington service team today. Also, keep in mind that we offer valet pick up/drop off for service appointments for when the time comes for your next Land Rover oil change.

What is Conventional (Regular) Oil?

Regular oil, also known as conventional oil, is a petroleum-based oil that’s used in internal combustion engines to provide lubrication to internal parts and even reduces engine wear. This motor oil is essentially distilled from crude oil that’s been mined from the ground.

What is Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic oil is also petroleum-based, but it provides enhanced lubrication and is even more stable than regular oil. Synthetic oil oxidizes less easily than conventional oil and is also better at retaining protective properties. So what makes synthetic oil different from regular oil? This is chemically developed from petrochemicals in an intense process in order to pinpoint superior properties. This is also why synthetic oil is more expensive than conventional oil. Synthetic oils also:

  • Are less viscous at lower temperatures
  • Offer enhanced engine cleaning properties
  • Better protect critical turbocharger parts (when equipped)

How Do Full Synthetic vs. Synthetic Blends Differ?

Synthetic blends are made up of part synthetic oil and part conventional oil, also referred to as mineral oil. These blends help reduce the cost as well as provide enhanced properties like synthetic oils.

Some vehicles do require full synthetic oil, though. So it’s important to double-check your owner’s manual to ensure you’re using the correct oil for your model to reach peak performance on Middletown roads and beyond.

Which Type of Oil Does Land Rover Recommend?

In order for Land Rover models to run at the top of their game, it’s recommended that Land Rover models use Castrol EDGE Professional oil. This oil is boosted with a special liquid titanium mixture that prevents the oil film from breaking down and also reduces friction. When your Land Rover uses this unique oil, you can bet you’re lowering your emissions and potentially saving fuel.
